Global Hunger Reaches New Heights as Conflicts Disrupt Food Supplies
The United Nations World Food Programme reports that the number of people experiencing acute food insecurity has reached 345 million — a 25% increase from last year and the highest figure since tracking began.
Multiple overlapping crises are driving the surge: conflicts in Sudan, Yemen and Myanmar have destroyed agricultural systems and disrupted supply chains.
The WFP is calling for an emergency funding response of $28 billion to prevent famine conditions from developing in nine countries.
> We are not witnessing a crisis. We are witnessing a catastrophe. And it is entirely preventable. — WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain
